The Cavapoo — Cavalier King Charles Spaniel × Poodle — has become one of the most sought- after small companion dogs for a simple reason: it aims to combine the Cavalier's sweetness with the Poodle's brains and lower-shedding coat. Often, it succeeds.

Origin & History

The Cavapoo emerged in the United States and Australia in the 1990s as part of the broader wave of "designer dog" crossbreeding that also produced the Cockapoo and Labradoodle, pairing the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's gentle, affectionate temperament with the Poodle's intelligence and lower-shedding coat. Unlike centuries-old purebreds, the Cavapoo isn't a fixed breed with a closed studbook — most are first- or multi-generation crosses, which means individual puppies can vary more in size, coat, and temperament than a purebred litter would. Reputable breeders who health-test both parent breeds help narrow that variability considerably.

Temperament

Gentle, affectionate, and eager to please — typically softer and less busy than a Goldendoodle, truer to the Cavalier's lap-dog heart with a dash of Poodle playfulness and cleverness mixed in. They're famously good with children, seniors, and other pets, and rarely show aggression when properly socialized.

The Companion-Breed Catch

Both parent breeds were built to be with people, and Cavapoos inherit that trait doubled: they're among the most separation-anxiety-prone mixes we cover on this site. Practice alone-time training from the first week home, building up absences gradually, and think honestly about your daily absence hours before choosing this breed over a more independent one.

Exercise Needs

Moderate and flexible: a couple of daily walks plus play and short training games — which they excel at, thanks to the Poodle side's intelligence and food motivation. They adapt to your pace more readily than higher-drive breeds, making them superb apartment dogs for owners who still commit to daily walks.

Grooming

The soft, wavy coat mats easily: brushing to the skin three or more times weekly plus professional grooming every 6–8 weeks keeps it manageable. Like all doodle-type mixes, "low-shedding" and "low-maintenance" are opposites — this is a coat that needs consistent attention. Clean and check the floppy, hair-lined ears weekly, since reduced airflow makes this combination prone to ear infections.

Health Considerations

Cavapoo health risks draw from both parent breeds:

• Mitral valve disease (from the Cavalier side) — ask breeders for cardiac-cleared parents; this is the single most important health question to ask
• Patellar luxation (loose kneecaps)
• Eye conditions including cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy
• Ear infections, given the floppy, hair-lined ear shape
• Syringomyelia, a neurological condition seen in some Cavalier lines

Choose breeders who health-test both parents for these conditions, or consider a Cavapoo or doodle-specific rescue. Lifespan typically runs 12–15 years.

Feeding Notes

Small companion breeds like the Cavapoo can gain weight quickly on a diet designed for a larger dog, so measured portions sized to their actual adult weight matter. Because they're so food-motivated and food-driven training works beautifully with this breed, it's easy to over-treat during training sessions — factor treats into the daily food total rather than adding them on top.

Sizes & Coat Variation

Toy-Poodle crosses typically land in the 9–15 lb range, while miniature-Poodle crosses run closer to 15–25 lbs — ask the breeder which Poodle size was used in the cross, since that's the single biggest predictor of adult size. Coat can range from loosely wavy (closer to the Cavalier) to tightly curled (closer to the Poodle), with shedding levels varying accordingly. No two Cavapoo litters, and sometimes no two puppies in the same litter, look or shed identically.

Is a Cavapoo Right for You?

Nearly ideal for first-time owners, families, and apartment dwellers who are home a fair amount and will fund the ongoing grooming schedule.
