The Great Dane is the world's tallest dog wearing the temperament of an oversized lap cat — gentle, mellow, and convinced it fits on your sofa. Mostly, it doesn't, and sits there anyway.

Temperament

The "gentle giant" label is earned: adult Danes are calm, patient, and sweet with children (supervised — a happy tail is a hip-height club). They're moderate watchdogs by size alone and genuinely dislike solitude.

Space, Cost & Logistics

Everything scales: food bills that rival a teenager's, XXL crates and beds, van-sized car requirements, and vet costs where every medication doses by weight. Counter-surfing requires no jumping — just standing. Plan the household around the size honestly.

Exercise Needs

Moderate: two good walks and some play. Critically, limit exercise during the long puppy growth phase (up to 18–24 months) — giant-breed joints are vulnerable, so no forced running or stairs marathons while growing.

The Bloat Conversation

Danes lead all breeds in gastric dilatation-volvulus risk. The routine: multiple smaller meals, calm before and after eating, and a serious talk with your vet about preventive gastropexy (often done at spay/neuter). Memorize the emergency signs — this is the breed's life-or-death topic.

Grooming

Easy: short coat, weekly brushing — just a lot of acreage.

Health & Lifespan

Beyond bloat: hip dysplasia, DCM (cardiac screening), and osteosarcoma. Lifespan of 7–10 years is the breed's heartbreak; make them great years.
