Standard Poodle Breed Guide

Forget the topiary haircuts: the Standard Poodle is a duck-hunting athlete with one of the sharpest minds in dogdom — and the most reliably low-shedding coat available in a large breed.

Temperament

Intelligent, dignified, and playful in equal measure. Standards bond deeply with family, tend gentle and patient with children, and carry an almost human attentiveness. They're sensitive dogs — thriving on inclusion, wilting under harshness or isolation.

Exercise & Mental Needs

Real athlete requirements: an hour-plus daily of walks, fetch, and ideally swimming (the webbed feet aren't decorative), plus mental work. They excel at obedience, agility, dock diving, and anything else you'd like to try — a bored Standard invents hobbies.

Grooming

The famous curly coat barely sheds but grows continuously and mats without mercy: brushing to the skin several times weekly plus professional grooming every 4–6 weeks. It's the same deal as the Miniature, scaled up — budget accordingly.

Training

Among the top handful of trainable breeds on Earth. They learn fast, retain forever, and positive methods suit their sensitivity perfectly.

Health Considerations

Watch for bloat (deep-chested — measured meals, calm around eating), hip dysplasia, Addison's disease and sebaceous adenitis in some lines, and eye conditions. Choose health-tested breeding; well-bred Standards commonly reach 12–15 years.
