The Border Collie is the sports car of dogs: the most capable learning machine in the canine world, engineered for twelve-hour workdays — and miserable when parked.

Temperament

Intense, focused, and profoundly attuned to their handler. The famous "collie eye" — that crouched, hypnotic stare — is herding software running constantly, on sheep, bicycles, children, and cats alike. With work, they're brilliant partners; without it, obsessive behaviors (shadow chasing, light fixation, compulsive herding) fill the void.

Exercise & Mental Needs

The maximum on both axes: 90+ minutes of hard physical exercise daily plus genuine mental work — training sessions, agility, trick chains, scent work, herding lessons. Physical exercise alone creates a fitter dog demanding even more; the brain must be tired too.

Training

The joy of the breed: they learn faster than you can teach, excel at every dog sport invented, and make average trainers look brilliant. Use positive reinforcement — the breed's sensitivity makes harsh methods uniquely damaging.

Grooming

Moderate: brush the weather-resistant coat 2–3 times weekly, more in shedding season.

Health Considerations

Generally sound: watch hips, Collie eye anomaly and PRA (screened lines), epilepsy in some families, and MDR1 drug sensitivity (ask your vet about testing before certain medications).

Is a Border Collie Right for You?

If you want a dog-sport partner, run daily, or have actual livestock — there is no better dog. If you want a companionable pet for a normal schedule, choose almost anything else and admire Border Collies on video, guilt-free.
