Australian Shepherd Breed Guide

Temperament

Devoted, energetic, and thinking constantly. Aussies bond intensely with their people, herd whatever moves (children included — manage the heel-nipping early), and greet each day asking "what are we doing?" They're more people-oriented than Border Collies but every bit as needful of work.

Exercise & Mental Needs

High and non-negotiable: 60–90+ minutes daily plus genuine brain work — trick training, agility, frisbee, nose work, herding lessons. The classic failure mode is a suburban Aussie with two short walks inventing jobs: barking patrol, shadow chasing, landscape renovation.

Training

A dream for engaged owners: fast, precise, eager. They excel at every dog sport and thrive on positive-reinforcement work — which doubles as the mental exercise they require anyway.

Grooming

The medium double coat needs brushing 2–3 times weekly, more in shedding seasons. The feathering collects burrs and mud with enthusiasm.

Health Considerations

Hip dysplasia and eye conditions (screened lines), epilepsy in some families, and the big one: MDR1 drug sensitivity — a gene common in herding breeds that makes certain routine medications dangerous. A cheap DNA test settles it; tell every vet who treats your dog. Natural bobtails and merle coats also mean responsible breeders never pair merle-to-merle.
