Can Cats Drink Milk? Usually Not — Here's Why

Short answer: most adult cats shouldn't drink milk. The saucer-of-milk image is one of the most persistent myths in pet care — and the cat's digestive system didn't get the memo.

The Lactose Problem

Kittens produce lactase to digest their mother's milk, but most cats lose that enzyme after weaning. Adult cat + cow's milk = undigested lactose fermenting in the gut: gas, cramps, and diarrhea, typically 8–12 hours later — long after the happy lapping.

Why Cats Want It Anyway

The appeal is fat and texture, not milk itself. Cats zero in on fatty, protein-rich smells — which is why the same cat ignores water but materializes for cream. Their enthusiasm is real; their digestion just disagrees.

• Lactose-free "cat milk"? Safe as an occasional treat; still empty calories.

What Cats Should Drink

Water, full stop — and getting enough matters more than most owners realize, since cats have a famously weak thirst drive.
