Sphynx Cat Breed Guide

The Sphynx is a heat-seeking, velvet-skinned extrovert — the cat that greets guests at the door and sleeps under your covers by right.

Temperament

Among the most affectionate and social of all cat breeds: dog-like greetings, constant companionship, and shameless lap occupation. They genuinely dislike being alone — plan for company, feline or human.

The Skin Care Routine

No fur means the grooming happens differently: gentle baths or wipe-downs every 1–2 weeks to manage skin oil, regular ear cleaning (oil accumulates there too), and nail care. Less brushing than a Persian, but never zero-maintenance.

Warmth & Sun

Hairless means cold-sensitive: warm bedding, sweaters in winter homes, and heated beds are appreciated, not decadent. Indoors only — their skin also sunburns through windows with long exposure, so provide shaded lounging.

Activity & Enrichment

High energy and highly intelligent: interactive play, puzzle feeders, climbing space, and training — many learn fetch and tricks readily. A high metabolism means bigger appetites than their size suggests.

Health Considerations

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) leads the list — choose screened lines and keep up regular vet checks. Skin conditions and dental issues also occur; their higher body temperature is normal, not fever.

Is a Sphynx Right for You?

For someone home often who wants a devoted, entertaining, blanket-sharing companion and will keep the bath schedule — an extraordinary pet. Not for minimal-contact households.
